Beaches & Activities

Big Island Beaches

From white sand to black, calm coves to surf breaks — the Big Island’s coastline is full of places to explore, relax, and reconnect.

Mauna Kea Beach

Often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. White sand, gentle waves, and excellent snorkeling near the rocks. Limited parking.

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area

Wide stretch of soft white sand perfect for swimming and boogie boarding. Great facilities and family-friendly. $5 parking fee for non-residents.

Beach 69 (Waialea Bay)

A local favorite for shaded picnics and snorkeling. Slightly rocky shoreline but clear water and fewer crowds than Hapuna.

Beach 49 (Kaunaoa Bay)

Smaller, salt-and-pepper sand beach inside a gated community. Limited parking keeps it quiet and pristine. Great snorkeling and calm waters.

Magic Sands Beach (Kona)

Named because the sand can disappear overnight with strong surf. Great for watching waves, bodyboarding, and sunset views.

Kukio & Kikaua Point Park

One of the easiest snorkeling spots on the island with protected reefs and calm, shallow water. Frequent turtle sightings and easy parking.

Rainbow Falls & Pe‘epe‘e Falls

Easy-to-access waterfalls near Hilo, surrounded by lush rainforest. Stop for photos or a short walk through tropical scenery.

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach

Famous for its jet-black sand and resident sea turtles. Easy access and facilities nearby. A must-see stop on any Big Island drive.
